Bring the Milky Way Home!
You can make a HUGE difference by doing the following:
1 | Make sure your outdoor house lighting is fully shielded and only lights your property where you need it
2 | Use amber-colored “bug” lights
3 | Use lights only when you need them – turn off interior lights in rooms you are not in, close the shades in rooms that you are in, and consider motion-activated outdoor lights that turn off automatically
4 | Use only as much light as you need – replace indoor and outdoor lights that are too bright
5 | Make it a goal to show a friend what a dark sky looks like at least one night every month
6 | Talk to your local and state representatives about the importance of being able to see starlit skies where you live
7 | Advocate for reducing light pollution in your community |
Make your lighting at home 100% Dark Sky and Neighbor Friendly (Residential Lighting Tips; Dark Sky Residential Lighting Products). Even though it may seem too little to make a difference, you might be surprised how much light pollution is produced by poorly shielded home lighting – and it “hits you where you live.” If everyone fixed their lights at home it would greatly improve the quality of the night environment where we live.
