FLAGSTAFF LIGHTING CODES AND OTHER STANDARDS
The Three Critical Dark Sky Strategies for Effective Night Sky Protection
From most to least important…
- Use amber lighting (S/P less than or equal 0.50) for general illumination (roadways, parking lots, etc.): 70% reduction
- Use only fully shielded lighting: 50% reduction (amber + shielding cumulative 85% reduction)
- Limit lighting on nonresidential properties to 35,000 lm per acre: 25% reduction (amber + shielding + amount cumulative 89% reduction)
(The reduction factors listed above and used to rank the importance of the strategies are based on published research and generally apply to observation locations near the lighting sources or within urban areas. The reduction amounts at greater distances vary, though in general increase with distance from the light source.)
Flagstaff Lighting Code 11-15-22 – with Definitions
Flagstaff Lighting Code with Explanatory Material
In Flagstaff, lighting for signage is regulated through a separate section of the zoning code:
Not all outdoor lighting is subject to the standards contained in the Flagstaff zoning code. In Flagstaff, roadway lighting is governed through the city’s Engineering and Design Standards. Lighting on state property, such as at Northern Arizona University or on state highways covered by the Arizona Department of Transportation, is specified using other vehicles for defining acceptable lighting.
